Fretting corrosion resistance tests of coated and uncoated CoCrMo discs against Ti6Al4V spheres were conducted on a four-station fretting testing machine in simulated body fluid at 1Hz for 1 million cycles. Post-fretting samples were analyzed for morphological changes, volume loss and metal ion release.

The small wear particles oxidize and areas of rust appear on the outer surface of the outer ring or the bore of the inner ring. Corroded areas may act as fracture nodes leading to cracking of the ring. Fretting corrosion refers to wear marks developed when gears rub against each other due to repeated vibratory micro-motion. The fretting process displaces lubricant, leading to the oxidization and rubbing away of asperities. Depending on the severity, fretting corrosion has a black, or reddish-brown appearance.

On this channel you can get education and knowledge for general issues and topics It is defined in ISO 15243: “fretting corrosion occurs in fit interfaces that are transmitting loads under oscillating contact surface micro movement. Surface asperities oxidize and are rubbed off and vice versa; a powdery rust (iron oxide) develops.

Fretting corrosion is defined as surface damage caused by micro motion abrasion due factors such as engine vibration and thermo cycling

Fretting corrosion is not only carbon steel, but also corrosion resistant. In our August issue we published summaries of two papers given at the Symposium on Fretting Corrosion organised by the American Society for Testing Materials. Three more papers are summarised below. They are concerned with testing equipment for evaluating fretting corrosion, the influence of fretting corrosion on the fatigue strength of fitted members, and the fretting corrosion tendencies of Fretting corrosion is mainly fretting oxidation of the zone of contact of electrical contacts. The causes of fretting corrosion are wear debris and oxides, which form a thick insulting layer in the zone of contact of the mating surfaces.
